Payless is located five minutes from the SJO Airport and provides shuttle service for all incoming and outgoing flights. We have used them several times and find their vehicles clean and operating well. There is minimal insurance that is required by law for the rental of a vehicle in Costa Rica. However, we also suggest you get the full coverage for this trip. This will ensure that if anything happens to the car at all, you will owe nothing. If you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of needing to make one, the claims process is simple, and Payless will honor your insurance and rental agreement without an issue (We know this from our own experience). Your credit card company may indeed cover the costs of damages for your rental vehicle, but please understand that in Central America, the claims process is far different from that in the United States, and it will take a much longer time. The rental car company will keep their hold on your card through the entire process, and often, this hold can be $10,000 or more.

The Uber app works in Costa Rica, just like in the United States. You will find that many drivers even speak some English. Please be aware that the custom in Costa Rica is for one rider to always ride in the front passenger seat with the driver. Please be sure to observe this custom to avoid any misunderstandings.

Ubers may not pick up or drop off curbside at the airport, depending on the driver and the time of day. If this is the case, you must walk to or from the bus stop directly in front of the International terminal, and there is a slight hill.
